Pricing Changes: Costs Now Stop Increasing at 50 Users

We're making a pricing change which affects larger instances: monthly bills are now capped at $1,000.

  • If you have 50 or fewer active users, you currently pay less than $1,000 per month. Your bill will not change (unless you later add more users).
  • If you have 51 or more active users, you currently pay more than $1,000 per month. Your bill will be reduced to $1,000 per month going forward.

This means that once you hit 50 users, you can add unlimited additional users for free.

These changes will go live during the standard weekly deployment on Saturday, July 2. If your instance is affected, the next invoice you receive after that will reflect the reduced price.

Why change?

This change is motivated by several factors, but they mostly boil down to per-user pricing not making much sense for larger instances.

In the future we plan to offer private clusters, which we expect will start at this price point. This pricing change avoids weird incentives where a private cluster (that is more expensive for us to provision and support) is cheaper than shared instancing.

Our hard costs and support costs stop increasing as quickly around 50 users, and removing these restrictions at this level is an easy way to sweep aside many of the support requests we do receive that are typical of larger organizations.

Because Phabricator is open source, Phacility competes against self-hosting. Without a cap on per-user costs, hosting stops making any sort of financial sense at some point. This change should make Phacility remain more attractive as organizations grow and give us a bridge until private clusters are available to more directly address some of the problems they face.
