- Why do men wear more clothing than women in sports? (800×800 px, 114 KB)
Event Timeline
With the exception of swimming and softball/baseball, almost all standard women's sports uniforms cover significantly less skin. This is especially true for shorts/pants. Less clothing seems to be an advantage in most cases, as it helps keep the body cooler. For example, men would likely be much more comfortable playing tennis in a short skirt. Or, to give a more realistic example, women's mid-thigh basketball shorts, which more closely resemble the shorts worn by NBA players in the 1970s, seem more practical than the long, knee-length shorts worn by men today. This seems to be true for many sports, where men's uniforms have become larger over time... but why?
Today, short, lightweight materials help keep the body cool and improve comfort, as seen in women's tennis uniforms. Many experts believe that men's uniforms could be more practical if they adopted a similar approach.
