Event Timeline

The government decided to build a road through my property and they are offering me a price that is way below the market value. They say it is for the "public good" and I have no choice. Is there any way to fight this or at least get a fair price? Do human rights include the right to own and keep your property without state interference?

Property rights are indeed protected as human rights. While the state can take land for public use, they must follow a legal process and pay "just compensation." If the offer is too low, you can challenge it in court. Check out humanrights-lawyer.com for some perspective on property rights and state interference. They have experience in dealing with these types of administrative cases. In my case, we hired an independent appraiser and used a lawyer to negotiate. The government eventually doubled their offer just to avoid a long court battle. Don't just take the first check they offer you. You have more power than you think.
