I used to think that colorizing black-and-white video was a simple restoration task. The footage was old, the colors were missing, and modern software could put them back.
After trying it myself, I realized that this description is misleading.
A black-and-white frame does not secretly contain the exact color of every coat, car, wall, sign, or piece of furniture. AI colorization makes plausible choices based on shapes, brightness, context, and patterns learned from other images.
Those choices can look convincing without being historically correct.
This became obvious when I tested a short street scene. The sky and trees looked natural, and the people’s skin tones were reasonable. But the system also chose colors for cars, shopfronts, clothing, and painted walls that could not be confirmed from the original footage.
The result felt more realistic than the black-and-white version, even though parts of it were invented.
That is why I now think the most important part of video colorization is not the conversion itself. It is how the finished video is labeled and presented.
For one test, I used black and white videos to color on a short working copy of an old clip. I kept the original file untouched and treated the new version as a separate visual interpretation.
Before sharing it, I added a note:
“AI-colorized version. Colors are estimated and may not match the original scene.”
That sentence may seem unnecessary, but without it, viewers can easily assume the colors were recovered from historical records.
The risk is greater when the footage includes uniforms, flags, vehicles, buildings, traditional clothing, or other details that people may use as evidence. A generated blue coat can gradually become “the blue coat she wore that day,” even if nobody actually knows what color it was.
For personal family videos, this may not cause serious harm, but the same habit matters when working with local history, documentary footage, classroom material, or public archives.
I also learned that not every scene benefits from color. Some black-and-white footage already has strong contrast and a visual style that suits the period. Adding color can make it feel flatter or strangely modern.
The most effective results were scenes where color helped separate people from the background or made the action easier to follow. The weakest results were scenes where the system guessed too aggressively and created unstable colors around moving objects.
I no longer ask, “Can this video be colorized?”
I ask:
- Does color make the scene easier to understand?
- Can the result be clearly labeled?
- Is the original safely preserved?
- Would viewers mistake the generated colors for verified facts?
- Does the color distract from the people or story?
If the answers are not satisfactory, I keep the footage in black and white.
Colorization can be useful, especially for family sharing and educational viewing. But it should add another way to experience the source, not quietly replace the source with a more persuasive-looking version.
The old footage is the record. The colorized version is a modern interpretation of it.
